Demonstration Organic Garden
As part of her 2018 Girl Scout Gold Award project (the highest achievement in Girl Scouts), Sofie Gmerek, pictured above with our gardener, funded for and supervised the creation of an organic vegetable and fruit garden at our school. She hired our gardener so that he could oversee the garden and teach students and their families how to improve their nutritional diet and by diversifying away from single-crop dependency on rice through raising various vegetables and fruits organically. Selling organic produce at local markets could also supplement families’ income. The harvest is shared among the families of all students who work with our gardener.
If you would like to help fund the Demonstration Organic Garden Project, these are ways you can help:
$25 for vegetable seeds
$50 for 3-5 young fruit trees ready for planting
$100 for one month’s salary for our gardener
$1200 for a full year’s salary for our gardener
Our gardener preparing compost for planting and teaching students how to maintain the garden. Students are excited to display their first harvest and share it with their families.
in 2018 there was a devastating storm that ravaged our garden. Our gardener and students’ made an incredible effort and rebuilt the garden. Their dedication shows their incredible resilience.
In 2019, we expanded the variety of crops grown by planting okra, morning glory, and two kinds of beans. In 2020, we expanded our garden to an area behind our school and planted papaya and other fruit trees that are taking hold now.
